MIME types
A MIME type, also called a media type, names the format of a file in the form type/subtype, for example image/png. Servers send it in the Content-Type header so browsers know whether to show, play or download a file.

Common questions
- What is the MIME type for JSON?
- application/json. Add ; charset=utf-8 only if your stack needs it, since JSON is UTF-8 by definition.
- What if the MIME type is wrong?
- Browsers may refuse to run scripts or styles with the wrong type, or download a page instead of displaying it. Fix it at the server and send X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff.
