URL encoder and decoder

URLs may only contain a limited set of characters. Everything else, like spaces, ampersands and non-Latin letters, is written as a percent sign and two hex digits. Use it for query strings and path segments.

URL encoding

Input

hello world & friends

Result

hello%20world%20%26%20friends
Done in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Paste the text or the encoded string.
  2. Choose Encode or Decode.
  3. Copy the result.

This tool is also built into Zest search, so you can type your question into the search box and get the same answer above the results.

Common questions

Why does a space become %20?
A space is not allowed in a URL. 20 is its hexadecimal character code, written after a percent sign.
Should I encode a whole URL?
Encode the parts you insert, such as a query value, not the whole address. Encoding the whole URL would also escape the slashes and colons that give it structure.
